I'm sorry, I know it feels like kicking a puppy sometimes but the fantasy of "escaping to another planet" makes no fucking sense and the more seriously you take it the more it enables people to keep fucking up the only planet we realistically havehttps://twitter.com/SaHreports/status/1367751038263033860 …

If we can't live sustainably on earth with abundant resources & habitable climate, we won't survive the harsh environments & limited resources of Mars. My guess is spending the moonshot effort on accomplishing former here is the more direct path to doing the latter there.

Attempts to live on Mars could make us smarter about maintaining ecosystems in general and potentially, a better understanding of our native one could be the main benefit of a human presence on Mars.

Humans have never been particularly good at living sustainably, we've hunted large mammals to extinction since the invention of flint weapons. We need to develop our knowledge of how to live sustainably, and Mars could be an excellent laboratory for that.

That isn't true, many civilizations have lived sustainably with respect to their environments. The laboratory is here, making habitable resilient & sustainable buildings here is the baseline for building them there. You can't run a successful laboratory 33.9 million miles away.

Typically sustainable societies with stable populations living in balance with environments were plundered & ransacked for land & resources by societies which had explosive population growth & excessive resource demands. This is basically colonialism going back to the Romans.

Yeah again just logically, on the face of it, demanding that we do something extremely difficult and expensive like start a Mars colony to "learn how to live sustainably" is warped, inverted logic "If your life and finances are falling apart, consider having a child"

"Nothing teaches you how to make a budget and organize your daily schedule like having a kid! Because then you *have* to get good at this stuff or you *and* the kid will suffer!" (This is literal advice people try to give sometimes and it's horrifying)

If you can't already do the simple stuff you *already* have to do just to *survive* then how the hell is setting yourself a much bigger challenge going to suddenly fix your ability to do that Maybe it works for some people, sure, but it's a hell of a gamble

Like this is the kind of Hollywood advice people give who think that the only kind of problem that can exist is a "lack of drive and motivation" and not an actual lack of ability It's not that I'm not "motivated" to get my finances in order, I just actually don't have money

The part they (or you) are leaving unsaid is the conviction that having a kid profoundly changes people. I think the truth is that that’s not universally true, but it is common.

In the extremely unlikely event that we were able to make a Mars colony function sustainably, it would be because it was a carefully centrally-managed project. Does anyone seriously believe that the likes of Musk would permit that approach to be pursued on Earth?
