The sheer *anger* you stir up when you just point out it's fucking obvious that humans are not going to live on other planets anytime soon, and it's a tremendous waste of money to try to make it happen, and doing so will not solve a single actual problem the human race has

I really like the idea of terraforming, but really, the idea that we could build a functioning eco system when we can't even maintain an existing eco system is ridiculous. Fixing Earth should be way easier than building Mars from scratch, so that should really come first.

If we can't live sustainably on earth with abundant resources & habitable climate, we won't survive the harsh environments & limited resources of Mars. My guess is spending the moonshot effort on accomplishing former here is the more direct path to doing the latter there.

Attempts to live on Mars could make us smarter about maintaining ecosystems in general and potentially, a better understanding of our native one could be the main benefit of a human presence on Mars.

Even IF we had the terraforming and geo-hacking technology to make Mars habitable and self-sustaining... where are all the resources to do it coming from? The billions of tonnes of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, organic minerals...?
-
Locally (ISRU) if I understand correctly. H and O from water, N from atmosphere, organics... from plants fixing CO2?
