Death of the Author has never meant the New Critic/Modernist idea that "We must pretend the author does not exist at all and this book fell out of the sky" Barthes was making a very different claim, that the writer is not an *authority* on the work they wrotehttps://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1367893300380844034 …

Excellent point. Writing is such a time consuming creative process that the possibility that a writer is completely unaware of the implications of what he or she wrote is improbable but not impossible. The problem is how one assessed if author was unaware or not.

Thinking of Simmons’ Ilium/Olympus cycle.. but I don’t think he really cares if people point out his insertion of a Islamaphobic plot point kinda out of the blue

Especially considering that his later work was blatant explicit Islamophobia.

A problem I have w/DOTA is that too often it is used, not to free the work from the supposed "tyranny" of the author, but to simply impose the tyranny of the critic/prof who insist THEIR interpretation is correct and everyone else's -- INCLUDING the author -- is wrong
