Wow, cannot believe someone is holding up Avatar the Last Airbender as somehow not doing culture mix and match. They literally imposed the Greek four element system into cultures that have five elements.

I am not super sure, tbh. I'm mostly just regretting using this example instead of complaining about the fire dragons.

But I suppose I still think of wind/water/earth/fire/void as five elements instead of four plus whatever it is the giant turtle said was a good idea. It's still that thing narratives do where the keep a thing everyone from that culture already knows as a Big Surprise Twist.

From my potentially inadequate search seems like there is a Buddhist element philosophy that shares those four as the tangible building blocks and a 5th more intangible element translated as "void" "Godai (Japanese philosophy) - Wikipedia"https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godai_(Japanese_philosophy) …

Right - the four elements are Hindu and the five are Chinese in origin, but the Hindu system crosses over to East Asia along with Buddhism
