OK, this is where my knowledge of Card is extremely relevant. I'm not going to speculate on why he has this, but he has a real and actual trauma related to bathrooms, he's alluded to it, those scenes are meant to be horrifying and definitely not what you're implying

Like, his anti-trans rant about bathrooms got derailed into a general rant about how "we can't be adding GENDERS to bathrooms, think about THE TACTICAL SITUATION IN BATHROOMS AS THEY ARE? THERE'S ALREADY AT LEAST ONE KIND OF GENITALS, MANY GERMS, USUALLY ZERO LASERS"

Ah, see if there's specific knowledge then that's fair enough. *However*... that's not obvious from the text, and the bathroom contexts in this part of the world make the inclusion look really deliberate.

I mean, knowing that the author is a bigot who believes in bathroom bills and can elaborate with *very original* talking points about why bathrooms are absolutely terrifying is pretty key Also, it *is* a place where cornering a bullying victim is easier

Yeah but I have literally never been naked in a public one. It's just not a thing that happens in Irish schools life. Mine was rare that it even had a reason to have showers at all.

It's a boarding school with showers though

I mean, I'll just leave you with this: Card's transphobic rant ended with saying "look, we need to check everyone's chromosomes before letting them in bathrooms, but honestly we also need single occupancy only, with triple locks, and lasers to sanitize after every occupant"

The dude is terrified of bathrooms and I have ideas why and none of them are pleasant you ask your average bigot who wants to mess with bathrooms, you will get one of like 3 arguments not Card. he will get into the lasers, and the security architecture, and TACTICS

Stop making me feel sorry for the bastard.

It is very obvious based both on his fiction and his nonfiction discussions of issues related to his fiction that 1) OSC was abused by his older brother as a child, 2) OSC's "sexual awakening" occurred with a fellow Mormon missionary as a teen, 3) OSC has deep shame about both

He said "stop" not "make us feel more sorry for him".

Yes. And that IS terrible, and NOBODY deserves that sort of abuse. That said, there are plenty of abuse victims who don't grow up to be bigots. We may pity him, but still need to hold him responsible.
