I think my problem with criticisms of the term "middlebrow" is that in my own imagination the word means "does nothing whatsoever to indicate that marginalized people can be protagonists"

Middlebrow is a basically a useless designation anyway. There's not a sliding brow scale. Lowbrow and highbrow are specific descriptors, but they don't form a continuum for all media to exist along.

The idea that just not being made by white guys *makes something highbrow* is something I strongly feel misuses the concept (insofar as there's ever a good reason to use it) and to the extent that that really is how people see it it's harmful to people with that marginalization
