"Value" does not exist as a concept in nature, it is a concept that can only be defined and created by human beings

Money definitely derives its value from trust rather than anything tangible. Seriously, say I start punching the dirt until I dig half a mile, and then give myself a "dirtbuck" for the effort. You gonna accept my fancy dirtbuck for a dollar?

It's barely even an analogy, this is what the blockchain fad had tons of startups doing -- trying to "monetize" various activities by rigging them to generate tokens on a blockchain and then assuming that once the tokens exist they will automatically have monetary value

It's absurd It's not like you need the blockchain to do it I could just give you Fake Internet Points for using a website or playing a game or whatever much more cheaply and easily with a regular-ass database

"But those points only exist as a number in a register on one person's centralized server They have no guaranteed persistent identity, they have no built-in scarcity, the database owner could erase them or massively devalue them by creating too many at a whim"

"The blockchain removes these problems" ...But THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM Holy fucking SHIT that is NOT the reason people refuse to give me US dollars in return for Twitter likes, or to accept Twitter likes in return for groceries and rent

They don't do that because THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON TO DO THAT WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT YOU DON'T PAY FOR THINGS UNLESS YOU HAVE A REASON You can't just fucking point to some random thing that's persistent and scarce and say "That's a currency now"

They understand that "value" is an arbitrary human social construct but don't understand that you can't just make fetch happen unilaterally on your own

The fact that baseball cards and Magic cards randomly became valuable collector's items doesn't mean that any dipshit can just decide to make up their own game and print out their own trading cards for it and immediately demand to be paid millions for an "ultra-rare" one
