On the other hand that was back when we just expected half of those episodes would be "filler" that wasn't very good that we'd never watch again It becomes embarrassing having to see them all there on the DVDhttps://twitter.com/AngryBlackLady/status/1366582293289050112 …

They really did used to have 32 episodes per season for shows like Melrose Place. It was madness. Now it’s like “here take 8 tight half hour episodes and we will see you back for season 2 in four years.”

the extremely reductive take is that movies are (and have always been) the equivalent of short stories, but in the era of prestige tv we've begun to expect tv shows to be novels one of these is just exponentially more work, it turns out

prior to the prestige era the expectation was that television was just a familiar face riffing on a story she's told you before

where this issue consistently shows up in the prestige tv era is the writing the actors show up and turn in terrific performances, the dp does great inventive things with the visual storytelling, and then the long-term characters arcs make no sense and the pacing is so uneven

because long-term narrative isn't the kind of thing that you can make work on an episode-by-episode basis, you it's a holistic property of--as you say--literally 20 hours of final footage, and balancing that is geometrically more difficult than balancing it over 2 hours or less

Turns out the square/cube law applies to narratives, toohttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square%E2%80%93cube_law …

i always thought of it more like this: as you increase the number of points on a plane, the number of lines you can draw between them increases exponentially similarly as you increase the amount of stuff in a narrative, the number of interconnections also increases exponentially

The combinatorial explosion, which is famously why old-school adventure games end up being so frustrating, because 99% of the responses to "Use X on Y" are the game just telling you "No, I cannot do that"
