On the other hand that was back when we just expected half of those episodes would be "filler" that wasn't very good that we'd never watch again It becomes embarrassing having to see them all there on the DVDhttps://twitter.com/AngryBlackLady/status/1366582293289050112 …

the extremely reductive take is that movies are (and have always been) the equivalent of short stories, but in the era of prestige tv we've begun to expect tv shows to be novels one of these is just exponentially more work, it turns out

prior to the prestige era the expectation was that television was just a familiar face riffing on a story she's told you before

I mean sure, back when shooting TV was incredibly expensive, for convenience's sake the first big TV shows were the talk/variety show model where you just, like, hang out with this dude and his guests for half an hour (like podcasts)

And the TV sitcom format literally grew out of just expanding the "skits" they did on those shows into full-on stories once their budgets got big enough to accommodate it

So yeah it wasn't even the equivalent of a "short story" in the literary sense, it's just, you know, someone's weekly humor column or whatever

I think you’re misreading her... it’s MOVIES that were/are short stories, not TV episodes. The TV procedural episode is actually a profoundly weird and wonderful form of storytelling that isn’t much like other types of storytelling that came before. It’s shame it’s now passé.

Yeah that's what I mean -- old school TV can't do separate, genuinely meaningful short stories with every episode, it's asking too much of the format
