Every gatekeeping conversation reminds me of the opposition to making the Bible available in languages other than latin. When your entire identity revolves around having a monopoly on how to interpret something, the priests get very mad when it's democratized

I think commercialization and broad access to a good are two separate phenomena that interact in interesting ways. A broadening of the audience (through higher income equality) can drive commercialization, but it doesn't necessarily do so.

There are cool media economics questions that can grow from that - how do we broaden access to high-quality goods? How do we get markets (and/or non-market forms of production like public broadcasting) to perform the best for most people?
