I spent three years sneering at the spirit events at my high school and then one year actually enjoying them because I finally pulled my head out of my ass and stopped rationalizing that everyone enjoying them was falling for shallow nonsense.

I think the complaint about MCU is not the output itself being middlebrow but when people start claiming it’s actually highbrow. I enjoy the films just fine but also can’t take claims they’re brilliant screenwriting seriously.

I want the words "middlebrow" and "highbrow" to die I think anyone who earnestly says something is "middlebrow, not truly highbrow" should receive a painful electric shock

That one REALLY pissed me off. I mean Oprah's book club, (and others like it!) have been key to promoting mass literacy and reading. And yeah complaints about 'middlebrow' stuff now you mention it often have more than a whiff of sexism.
