It's a balancing act, like to demonstrate this problem in my classical Chinese class they showed us a poem whose annotation was twice as long as the poem itself (because every single line was a reference to something)

You could make an argument that annotations are always incomplete and could in theory go on forever Like you *know* what the reference to Malcolm in the Middle is on WandaVision if I explain it to you but arguably you don't *get it* unless you actually watch several episodes
