Having a moral duty to look after someone's interests or respect their stated desires does not require that you "get them" on an emotional level at all Indeed if this duty is unconditional then it becomes extra important to exercise it on people you don't "get" and never will

The unfortunate thing here is that if you don't understand someone on an emotional level, it's harder to interpret, understand, and cater to their stated interests There'll be a larger gap between the information you receive and the information they benefit from you knowing
