Like the whole thing about the word "narcissist" is that, on the superficial level, it's *not* a term of abuse It's not like saying "asshole" or "motherfucker" or "piece of shit" or just "jerk" It has an air of clinical detachment to it, of objectivity

It does not have either of those things in common usage. It’s used exactly the same way ‘asshole’ and ‘motherfucker’ are

Lol no If someone cuts you off in traffic your first impulse is not to scream "You delusional narcissist!"

It might not be an expletive but there’s no context where it’s ever anything but an insult

Yes, and in reality that's how the word "obese" is used too I am explaining exactly why I think it's a *worse* insult because it's a *stealth* insult

‘Obese’ has a ton of use as a clinical term in the mainstream though. ‘Narcissist’ is not and has never been a stealth insult in any imaginable way. It’s purely an insult in every context outside the DSM5

People who say "Trump is a narcissist" aren't just saying "Trump is an asshole," though. They're trying to invoke mental illness and disfunction.

Even before what I'd call the "narcisphere" (what Kristen Dombeck wrote about in The Selfishness of Others) really became a Thing in the Discourse, throwing around "narcissist" was a pretty big cultural problem

The word got a lot of popularity from cultural conservatives railing against the "self-esteem movement" and yelling about how young people's "narcissism" was inherently tied to their "self-absorbed" political views It was where the avocado toast stuff got started 20 years ago

Jean Twenge's Generation Me and all that shit It's discourse I find extremely distasteful (full disclosure -- as one of those "narcissistic" millennials who gets accused of "narcissism" by conservatives and others all the fucking time)

It is an *extremely common* way for conservatives to punch left and bigots to punch down It is basically commonly accepted among TERFs right now that trans people are fundamentally "narcissistic", that to "care that much about how people see you" to transition is a symptom

Which is just a resurrection of dead discourses past, George Will accusing Black culture of "narcissism" by pointing to rappers and athletes, pastors preaching about the "narcissism" of "gay culture" with Broadway and fashion designers etc.

It is very, very easy to perform Russell conjugation on the concept of narcissism -- "I'm self-confident, you're self-absorbed; I'm self-aware, you're self-obsessed; I stand up for myself like a man, you put yourself ahead of everyone else like an asshole"
