I do really, really appreciate this trend of showing us iconic superheroes completely burning out and giving up and fucking off and disappearing It really speaks to me

In fact what's most tragic about Thor and Luke is that they specifically disappeared after their greatest failure because they didn't want to hurt anyone, ever again Letting people down through inaction is painful but not as painful as actively fucking up and hurting them
-
The fall from grace is also deeply terrifying. They were both at the height of their powers when they failed, and a lot of people look at those characters and want to be them. Seeing that people can still fuck up and become disappointments at the top of their game is scary.

I don't see old Luke as a pathetic loser. I see him as the hero whose time for heroism has past, and is now playing out the string. He's withdrawn and disillusioned, but will always have the memory of having been Luke Skywalker.
