It’s so weird to see someone act like the humanities in college are extreme esoterica, instead of like, an extension of the education that person got for 13 years of their life.

There's also a gender aspect. STEM fields are male dominated, the humanities have a larger number of women (which now includes social sciences for this very reason). There's a reason biosciences are starting to be separated from physics/chem, more women major in biology.
