I know the aesthetic and source material are very different but I feel like the themes and ideas in WandaVision, especially after the last episode, remind me very powerfully of a Miyazaki film

The juxtaposition of incredibly heavy raw emotion and childlike whimsy, right next to each other The way Wanda's desperate desire to escape into fantasy is shown in all its dysfunction but we never lose our sympathy with her, the beauty of her dream

i don't MCU so I feel like I would be totally lost, but also literally everything I pick up about this show from cultural osmosis makes me feel like it is Exactly My Shit and I should be watching it

Watching the previous movies definitely sounds like a better idea since the show pulls from so many of them, but I feel the show does a good enough job at filling in the relevant information.

I go back and forth on whether it would be "worth it" to watch the relevant movies just to "prep" for this show Like yeah it really does have an impact if you know the backstory in a way it doesn't if you're just picking it up as you go

But it's not the same impact as if you binged those movies just to watch this show either I dunno I think that, even though it's the worst reviewed movie on the list, probably the most essential viewing is Age of Ultron

Because that's the one that introduces Wanda and Pietro and all the stuff about Pietro's (spoiler alert) death has way more impact if you actually got to see their relationship beforehand

Wanda and Vision's relationship as developed in Civil War/Infinity War/Endgame is the other major relationship that informs these movies but it's like 5% of those movies' running time I mean Vision isn't even actually in Endgame, we just get to see Wanda being really mad

I guess the other thing is if you've seen the SPOILER movies then all the meta shit of SPOILER appearing and acting exactly as he does when playing SPOILER makes the whole thing a much more awesome reference But even talking about what it is is a spoiler

this /density/ of "shit you cannot even approach talking about in cleartext" is, itself, unadulterated JC-bait and I'm very excited in principle
