Why does West Virginia get to take credit for not joining the Confederacy when it feels like they've been openly helping it out for as long as I've been alivehttps://twitter.com/inyourcalture/status/1365129772955799552 …

I don't think they even try to take credit for it anymore, they treat it as kind of an embarrassing peccadillo

Yeah there is some really deep irony though that all the reasons West Virginia sucks are *because* they split off from Virginia because they didn't want to fight for the Confederacy

Because it turns out having been a former Confederate state barely meant getting any actual formal punishment at all, so the general structural reasons the South struggled economically hit WV just as hard as VA after the war, if not worse

(After all, the plantation economy slowly languished and died under industrialization after the war But the plantation owners still had a lot of capital to sit on as business dried up WV seceded from VA in the first place because they had no plantations)

And then thanks to the vicissitudes of history the federal government becomes big business in the 20th century and a ton of the economic growth in DC ends up sprawling out to VA for bullshit zoning reasons and VA sucks up all that sweet tax revenue

And as much as "real Virginia" bitches and moans about the woke SJW kids moving into Arlington and turning the state blue and filling it with coffee shops and polycules They still suck up those tax dollars and benefit from it

All they have to do is look over the border to WV to see where they'd be without that money And marvel at the historical irony that they get to share in the profits from having liberal federal employees move in *because* they're in the part that joined the Confederacy
