My thought is, Hasbro just saved millions in overhead by eliminating redundant packaging for products that are, in the end, the same thing.

that's the anthropomorphic perspective. potatoes would say that the human alternative to being eaten by our descendants is to exchange pollen. they'd call it weird, because potatoes don't need to pollinate to reproduce. (sorry, just being silly)
