And like the dramatic power of the scene just makes it more dickish "Oh, your new show got canceled and you wanna come back? Sorry, no retconning allowed, your character's death was one of the most memorable tragic moments in TV history"

They really set it up so it'd seem like he was the asshole for saying anything about it or trying to get them to change it Even though, by all reports, most of his castmates very much saw it as the writers being assholes and that's part of why their emotional reaction was so raw

Like they were going to have an actual farewell party for him after shooting wrapped on that episode and after the big twist reveal no one even felt like going Stevenson said he saw the announcement and went to his dressing room and cried for two hours, then just left

It's kind of funny that sort of in response to this, Stevenson's replacement, Harry Morgan, loyally proclaimed his willingness to continue playing Col. Potter as long as he was able Even carrying the character to the critically disdained spinoff "AfterMASH"
