I swear to God a lot of white people have absorbed arch jokes about how being white is bad because it means you get sunburn and skin cancer and actually turned it into a big serious thing about how this is a disability they suffer from that you should respecthttps://twitter.com/MediumSizeMeech/status/1364575204241010690 …

Anyway of course Black people can still get sunburns and skin cancer, and if you didn't know that then why wouldn't you listen to the mom - who has a lifetime of experience with both her own complexion and with sunlight - when she tells you otherwise

Making the white kids sit in the shade while the Black kids sit in the sun is some 1880-style racism, and that would be true even if skin cancer didn't exist.

At least they didn't put the Black kids to work fanning them

Not only can people with darker skin still get skin cancer--the damage is not as obvious and is harder to detect. Sunburn is like an early warning system, plus most textbooks and medical training focus on white skin.

So, as with so many things medical, Black people are at a disadvantage and likely to have their skin cancer go undiagnosed for much longer because our health care system is racist.
