See also "Wendy" from Peter Pan People try to say it's short for "Gwendolyn" (via the German "Wendla") But when JM Barrie put it in Peter Pan it was because of a little girl who used it as a nickname based on her way of saying "friend" ("fwendy wendy")

A similar thing happened with "Estella." I mean I don't know that it was ever very popular, but it was an unheard of name in Victorian England and then Dickens had a character named that.
