Part of the reason his academic background was so jacked up was that (then-)modern science with specialties and fiddly bits and the contention that Man could not know the Entire Universe was inelegant and uncomfy but ancient Greeks were soothing and comprehensive

Yes, he is attracted to the kind of culture where someone making grandiose claims about a Universal Theory of Everything is a reason you *should* listen to that person rather than a reason to shut them down

We are never told what his secret of life actually is (unlike adaptations that say it has something to do with dead bodies and electricity) We're just told it's some kind of synthesis of several contradictory ancient theories on the subject that doesn't make sense to anyone else
