The concern is always about getting *fired*, about getting speaking engagements *rescinded*, about having book contracts *canceled* Something that someone already has, and therefore objectively deserves, being taken away No-backsies as a sacred principle

You may be on to something. One thing these people constantly dregde up as a defense against "cancellation" is "But *I* was a 1-hit-wonder 12 years ago. How can you not treat a flavor-of-the-week with undue importance?!" Like they're depending on media inertia to work it's magic.
