He is 100% an author surrogate. So was Xander. I'd say Wash was one too but it feels pretty clear that Mal is who Joss WANTS to be.

It sure ain't subtle. Like, that much of the metaphor - and the unflatteringness - was being discussed from early in the show's history. It's just been interesting to revisit it as more unflattering facts about the person whose author surrogate it was have come to light.
