As paradoxical as it may sound to say this about a 12.5k-word essay, you need to read this, because it sums up what I hate about Scott Alexander much better than I canhttps://twitter.com/ElSandifer/status/1363170201232146433?s=19 …

This is how my beef with the other Scott started too Scott Alexander's viral "takedown" of me with "In Favor of Niceness, Community and Civilization" - an argument there's nothing wrong with hanging out with eugenicists - came out of him arguing with one of his own commenters

This commenter (
@chrysopoetics) had just said that he was a marginalized and vulnerable person (PoC, from the Global South, queer, neurodivergent, trans) who'd thought the rationalist community was supposed to be a haven for weird nerds but more and more it was filled with creepsShow this thread -
"Why should being a rationalist mean having to expose yourself to MRAs and eugenicists and race realists and neoreactionaries Why is your intellectual stimulation more important than my safety"

And in response to this short comment - which was really not much longer than my tweet about it - Scott *laid into him* Launched one of those gigantic novella-length broadsides

This one, which was much more personal and revealing than "Niceness, Community and Civilization" and has since been scrubbed, was in the exact same genre as Scott Aaronson's incel post "ACTUALLY it is YOU who make ME feel unsafe"

there's a rhetorical trick to these kinds of protestations, too, where any woman who is willing to say she has been victimized by someone's patriarchal power is automatically a cut-and-dry "feminist" with all the boilerplate feminist positions
-
When Kathy Forth posted her
#MeToo
shortly before she died one of the commenters SAID TO HER FACE "A lot of us don't like feminists because they're irrational; if you tell us areas where you disagree with feminism so we know you're not one of them you might get a better response"
