Isaiah Berlin has a great essay about how this idea of true self, when combined with the "positive liberty" notion of freedom as self-governance, leads to fascism almost directly If it's not the *actual* people who should govern themselves but their "true selves"

I don't like to go on religious rants, reminds me of edgy atheist times when I was younger, but if a better descriptor of Christianity exists than "highly appealing yet toxic" I have yet to hear it.

Honestly, agreed. And the fundamentalist churches (and to be honest, even some of the non-fundie ones) basically practice psychological abuse as a matter of course.
