Even the conventional modern definition of fish is polyphyletic and therefore not particularly useful to biologists, isn't it?

But like it's not *objectively wrong* From a simple logic standpoint, "jellyfish, cuttlefish, goldfish and orcas are all fish because they all live in the water" arguably *makes more sense* than the paraphyletic definition

Like you'd have to spend some time explaining to an ancient fisherman (whose only interest in the term "fish" is it means things you can catch out of the water to eat) about the whole "backbone but no legs" thing

It would seem at least that the production of vast biological diversity, iteration with variation is the part we can observe without making value judgements. Whereas the process of evolution always seems to get hijacked by how we try to order the world hierarchically.
