I remember MadTV had an extremely mean sketch about Christina Aguilera Going onstage saying "I'm a proud Latina and Spanish was my mother tongue" and then singing new lyrics to "What a Girl Wants" that go "Buenos dias, me llamo Christina, cómo estás"https://twitter.com/MaraWilson/status/1362836730458464257 …

That sounds really funny though if it's actually a white person; I don't know enough about Xtina to say one way or another

She has a Spanish surname because she has a Latino dad and an Anglo mom, but was raised speaking English in an extremely culturally WASPy environment (her mom remarried and for most of her childhood she was in the Kearns family)

So the thing the sketch is making fun of is true But the reason it's true is that her dad was abusive and became estranged from the family when they divorced when she was six So it's not a GREAT thing to be making fun of

I'm sure MadTV didn't bother to put that much thought into it. Pick some other act though and it gets a laugh from me Bob's Burgers did a similar joke but the joke wasn't "reaching a Latinx audience" it was "Tina Belcher trying to pretend the lyrics are something else"

Yeah I mean - the reason they picked her is that she's a very obvious example of someone with a Spanish name who is nonetheless for most practical purposes a "white girl" Which is a real, fraught issue that trips up Americans because of how we think of race
