Probably a bit of column A and a bit of Column B; there's fewer obvious aspirational goals, so people are contenting themselves with more a vague sense of spiritual/scientific curiosity.

I feel like disillusionment actually plays a pretty big role in this one - the Space Race bill of goods was never going to be something that could easily be cashed, but space programs' most obvious crowd-pleasing efforts just petering out did a real number on public faith in 'em
