The optimistic humanism of old school science fiction is that there *are no* hard limits on what tech can accomplish so any human style beings that exist have a "destiny to spread to the stars" Every single bit of evidence and common sense is against this idea

Not to go to far down the speculative tech rabbit hole. But, how can we be certain no one ever cracks a way of traveling vast distances without physically covering those distances? It's really hard to predict what future tech will accomplish. Not that I see this happening soon.
