No, I don't think I'd win if I'd stopped playing by the rules or I would have stopped playing by the rules. I agree he represents that *fantasy*, but the thing that makes him uninteresting is that he doesn't have to pay any price for it, he's happy with who he is

Certainly in a fairly one dimensional sense of Batman just representing order vs. chaos. Or sometimes, as in the Killing Joke, Gordon representing order and Batman is someone who is kind of in between the two.

Well, yeah. This is why 70's Batman (still my fav. Batman era) is all over the place tonally. One the one hand it's got this gritty, street level new Hollywood vibe ala the French Connection and other dramas...but you also have Batman going to Spain and fighting-
