No, I don't think I'd win if I'd stopped playing by the rules or I would have stopped playing by the rules. I agree he represents that *fantasy*, but the thing that makes him uninteresting is that he doesn't have to pay any price for it, he's happy with who he is

The most workable, and maybe most enjoyable yet shallow concept, is that he just likes fcking with Batman. He's not really TRYING to win anything. And there's a good deal of textual support for this. The conflict with Batman is the ends, not an obstacle nor means.

I hesitate to bring it up, but wasn't that the whole point of The Killing Joke? That Joker was just fucked up and wanted other people (Batman and Gordon) to be fucked up too.

But it's not the same thing really. In that, he DOEs have a specific goal/point he's seemingly trying to make. But in other cases...he just seems to enjoy fighting Batman, and there's not much more to it than that. He's not trying to get Batman to DO anything.

Gotcha. It feels very "evil opposite". Batman wears black, is serious, fights crime. Joker wears bright colors, is unserious, commits crime. What I find sad is that Batman has more interesting foes who get less attention.

Yeah, Joker was NEVER a deep or well developed character. Moore KIND OF moved it there, but it still took until Nolan and aughts era DC that he became a "chaos elemental" type character.

Batman had enemies with an ideology or a point or a specific grudge at various times. But the Joker was never one of them, and he was never the ideological opposite per se. Batman's philosophical archnemsis was never the Joker. It was Ra's Al Ghul.

But he's harder to write and had a more specific, dark philosophical outlook that constrained the kind of stories you could tell about him. The Joker was, perhaps, more FUN to write.

Ras al Ghul was a conscious attempt to change the scope and the tone of Batman stories in the 70s so instead of a criminal/madman from the streets of Gotham you have this global-scale "Bond villain" Some writers really took to that shift, others resisted it

Chaos Elemental Joker arguably was too, kinda, an attempt to turn Batman into some sort of quasispiritual struggle over philosophy?

Certainly in a fairly one dimensional sense of Batman just representing order vs. chaos. Or sometimes, as in the Killing Joke, Gordon representing order and Batman is someone who is kind of in between the two.

Well, yeah. This is why 70's Batman (still my fav. Batman era) is all over the place tonally. One the one hand it's got this gritty, street level new Hollywood vibe ala the French Connection and other dramas...but you also have Batman going to Spain and fighting-
