Kathy Forth's suicide note is shocking because you can tell how much keeping the "rationalism" community's secrets ate away at her Her overwhelming despair wasn't just her trauma at sexual assault -- it was the slow realization *she couldn't get anyone around her to care*

And she tried, oh Lord did she try Her suicide note is a painful read because it's this incredibly long, jargon-laden, stilted attempt at describing her pain in "rationalism"-speak Trying desperately to cerebrally, unbiasedly debate inside her head if she was crazy or not

Which is why Scott brutally coming down hard on the side that "Yup, she was crazy, she was making up false accusations and she was out to delusionally harm innocents" is so fucking horrifying

Like watching the Catholics bury one of their victims murmuring "Damn shame the demons got to him"

And Forth's suicide note really is a rough read, tremendous trigger warnings for anyone who's been through anything similar The idea that these people she worships as icons of compassion and thoughtfulness and truth have an "irrational bias" she can't overcome breaks her

And she tries to convince herself that *she's* "irrationally biased" -- because if she were one of her own friends she would absolutely look at herself and think she was a vicious raving SJW brainwashed by 3rd-wave feminist misandry -- and she CAN'T So she kills herself

The suicide note *actually says* that she would rather die than live her life as an enemy of the community she loves, that she'd "rather be dead than be an SJW" It's fucking grim shit

the forth letter is indeed incredibly grim, and one of the things it reveals by implication is that by the end forth didn't have any normie friends who could give her any kind of outside perspective everyone she knew and cared about was in the cult

to me that's one of the biggest red flags that it is, in fact, a cult we're not just talking about epistemic closure, but social closure indeed a sort of social closure specifically encouraged by all this talk of the Rational Elect and the irrational masses

so that forth, after being repeatedly sexually assaulted, after having her attempts to do anything about that sexual assault rebuffed and discounted, couldn't just go be with a normie friend could no longer even see a life outside the cult which left her a single grim choice

The "rationalist community" lies about a lot of things it advertises itself as The whole being-rational thing most of all, of course, but also the idea that it's radically egalitarian and the old -isms don't apply there And the idea it's a haven for neurodivergence

A lot of the smears on Kathy Forth after her death were just a civil, polite, carefully worded version of the old "bitch be cray" That people generally disliked her and felt uncomfortable around her because she seemed disturbed and overly intense and whatnot

And it's like yeah Okay, sure, Kathy Forth was neurodivergent to a degree that impaired her functioning and suffered some pretty serious mental illness She openly admits to all that right away in her note No one could possibly contest that
