I knew a Black dude at my mostly-white high school who talked with some amusement about stopping at a McDonald's drive-thru with a bunch of other guys in his car after a game and the guys actually flipping out when they were told the drive-thru was in *gasp* COMPTONhttps://twitter.com/jayasax/status/1361508603912474629 …

The height of anti-Compton hysteria was, of course, before my time, when I was a small child in the '80s But even into the early 2000s the word "Compton" was enough to send supposedly tough teenage guys into terror of gang wars and drive-by shootings if they were white enough

I went to E3 2017. My mother (white, from Cypress) had a total shitfit at our cousin who chose to drive us there on the streets instead of on the raised highways.

few years ago I taught elementary after school classes there and the stigma was so deeply ingrained from media i had to actively remind myself to confront & then dismiss it every single time I drove down. big privelege-checking wake up call

Everything I've heard about Compton at the height of its notoriety was that, for all that it was cracked up to be scary, between dawn and dusk it was pretty much any other neighborhood where people just got up and went to work

A friend of mine held a party for freshman at her house in Compton in 1992. It was fine. A buddy's place in Riverside in '92 was *way* sketchier.

USC is very near Compton and I lived there for about seven years. Admittedly when you get close to USC there's a lot more private security around and it feels walled off from the surrounding areas in some intangible way.

Family friends of ours who grew up in the Bronx (I think their dad is Hispanic, but may be from Spain?) were on one of those “family swap” shows with some country white folks and one part of the show, took painfully white girl to Harlem and the episode played it ~~like that~~.

Related, their school is the one from that Meryl Streep movie “music of the heart”. Two of the siblings are in it, as the same character at different ages. And while it’s a “inspiring white teacher at inner city school” plot, … their dad is a university president
