Scott's view of the world is completely fucking horseshit and it's 100% based on the premise "The people who truly hold power and privilege in the world are the people on the Internet who have the power to make me feel bad" https://twitter.com/queersing/status/1361364005793632256 …

i feel like the giveaway here is "fashionable, high status, socially adept" he just means "cool," he just means "people i think are cool critique capitalism and this gives me bad feels" aka cognitive dissonance

It's absurd! Money controls absolutely everything in our society that *it is possible for someone to control*! The stuff he says it doesn't control is stuff that even the most dystopian cyberpunk writers have to handwave new technologies to let you control!

"I guess you can't *literally* go to the store and buy a whole new body that people find attractive And I guess there's no *literal* slot that you can put money into that can *actually pay people to make them like you*, as opposed to pretending to because you're their boss"

The whole issue is that while yes, obviously, there are forms of status and power that aren't money, plenty of them, the whole basis of our society is to try to find as many of these as we can locate and devise a means to turn them into money if at all possible

It is the slow and steady progression of this endeavor -- the giant project to use money as the universal scorekeeper for every aspect of life, just so we can finally know what the score is -- that is the whole thing critics of "late capitalism" are so freaked out over

And I think on some level people like this defend capitalism on ridiculously pathological aesthetic grounds The rationalists are a caricature of Weberian *rationalizers* They want to turn everything in the world into numbers, just for the sake of doing so You can count numbers

The idea of any kind of status existing that you can't directly measure they find extremely threatening It's the root of all these Nice Guy rants "Okay but I'm still attracted to him more than I'm attracted to you" "But WHY?! It doesn't MAKE SENSE"

The whole obsession with standardized test scores and monetizing things and whatnot It looks really ugly next to a rant like "Radicalizing the Romanceless" Like the secret fantasy is a world where if your Combined Citizenship Score is high enough it's illegal not to fuck you
