Well you don't HAVE to, in fact if you follow his advice you piss off other party members and get Dark Side points You can find out his big secret without actually resolving any quests to his satisfaction

And, in fact, the way KotOR 2 works negative influence is as good for unlocking content as positive influence, so if you consistently insult and belittle him and then do the opposite of what he says on quests you get all his content pretty easily
