I like how the OP in this screenshot mentions this charity for like two lines, goes on this long unhinged Nazi rant, and Scott's only comment is "That charity sounds good!", and you think this is normal and acceptable

I think this isn’t a good argument to convince people like the person you’re responding to. You’re starting from a moral lens, while he’s probably starting from a consequential lens. It’s a valid argument, just not everyone will find it convincing.

Arthur doesn’t argue with the barely hidden Nazis to convince them lol It’s just an easy way of demonstrating to the audience what kind of people come out to defend Scott Alexander

I mean, that’s part of the issue right? Nazis looking for converts and genuinely confused and unconvinced people are hard to tell apart. I tend to go with assuming the best until I’m proven wrong. At which point I’ll call shit out like anyone else.

It's just a huge waste of time. I had a 3 day discussion with @miniver where we spoon fed why Scott was not actually a center-left blogger. He finally came out with his "literal nazis should be allowed at software conferences as long as they don't talk about politics there" take.

Really makes you wonder why they engage in logorrhea when 14 words would suffice. I have yet to see a *single* instance where being nice and thoughtful instead of pointing and laughing has paid off on twitter.

If someone not being a fash-enabler is contingent on you being nice to them ... you probably don't want their support anyway. The people who are genuinely invested put not supporting horrifically awful political positions over someone being brusque to them on the internet.

I don’t think it’s a matter of being nice, I think it’s a matter of fundamental value systems. Rationalists tend to systematize and break things down, and don’t tend to care all that much about what others think. Using moral arguments for these people won’t work.

It doesn’t mean they’re bad people, it doesn’t mean they’re evil. It just means they could be, and I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt because we could all be evil.

Counterpoint: The difference between "amoral" and "evil" is, almost by definition, academic

The best summary of the kind of person Scott is was in Dorothy Thompson's "Who Goes Nazi?" Mr. G will never be a Nazi, because he will never be anythingpic.twitter.com/Uhe5i9xXFX

That sounds right, and also sounds like me to a lesser extent. I’m probably giving him a chance because I see myself in him. I’ll need to reconsider how I feel about him.

The whole deal with people like this is not only are they more interested in being right than not being harmful, they're also obviously more interested in being interesting than being right
