I genuinely think it's because COVID-skeptics are fundamentally worse people They hear the argument "If you personally are young and healthy, there's a very low chance you personally will die" That's all they need to hear "Sucks to be you Grandpa"https://twitter.com/LvkeRetvrns/status/1360949854034419714 …

As someone with a (frankly, probably a bit *too* strong and uncontrolled) sense of empathy, I admit I fundamentally *do not grasp* a lot of these people. Unless you *actively hate someone* (an emotion that I really only first felt, oh, about 4 years ago), HOW CAN YOU NOT CARE?!

(And I do mean 'a bit to strong', because I catch it firing off towards people who really, rreeeallyyy don't. Deserve it. Or, at least, when there are way better focuses of my energy.)

"Oh no, that man is sad and scared he's ruined his life ;.;" "Empathy that man is literally a neonazi who participated in a rally that killed people." "But he's so scared" "NO. BAD EMPATHY, NO BISCUIT." (.. thank you, Pratchett, for teaching me metacognition)

This is why Kate Manne coined the term "himpathy" Empathy in its crudest form is a kneejerk impulse to take the side of anyone whose pain you can easily see right in front of you And our society is not at all evenhanded in whose pain it makes visible

You have a much higher chance of hearing about it somehow when a privileged white man stubs his toe than hearing about any other suffering anywhere else in the world

Hell there are privileged white men whose whole JOB is going "Let me use my Ivy League training and connections to write at great length about the experience of me stubbing my toe to make it sound like it contains valuable insights into the whole human condition"

And then a bunch of kids HAVE TO READ "Ow! I Stubbed My Toe: A Reflection" by Henry McWhiteBoy Crackerson, think about it and digest it and then write a whole paper on it, so they can pass their freshman English class and get a BA for a chance at a decent job

I'm joking, of course, it's not usually "Ow! I Stubbed My Toe", it's "Ow! I Cheated On My Wife With an Undergrad" or something

but said cheating is accompanied by an endless retelling of the guilt and self-hatred occasioned by getting his nut with a 23 year-old student from Chevy Chase or Scarsdale

"Ow! My Pattern of Sexual Arousal Doesn't Match Up With the Self-image of the Kind of Person I Like to Think I Am, Such That My Sense of My Identity is Destabilized, and That Hurts! Kind of Like How It Must've Felt to Be a Slave!"
