YMMV but Scott comes off as disingenuous to me in these interactions

Maybe he doesn't believe he has sufficient reason to stake out a position on the matter and therefore does not speak about it. That would be reasonable given the topic is highly controversial and actively researched even among experts.

If you are talking about the mutability of class in America then you are staking out a position on the role of race one way or another. If Scott is willing to argue for/against specific interventions then he should be willing to address race, or else avoid the topic entirely.

I should say that I find much of SSC interesting and thoughtful. But my sense is that Scott is not very motivated to think about racism and sees Murray's views as academic eccentricities. So when confronted with the implications of those views, he repeatedly punts.

It's like writing thousands of words about how black people prefer living in ghettos, and then when somebody says "uh, what about red lining?" just clamming up and saying that you're only interested in cultural choices

I can't accept that analogy. I can agree it's problematic to form an opinion about class mobility without considering race, but that's not remotely the same as writing *about* race and dismissing racism in that writing.

you're right, let me amend it: it's like positing that *people* in the US seem to naturally want to live in ghettos while repeatedly refusing to engage with the history of redlining

I can agree with that, and it aligns with the criticism I independently made recentlyhttps://twitter.com/sapporophyte/status/1360655963846418432?s=19 …

griller bill @justwant2grillMy biggest criticism of SSC is that Scott Alexander took it upon himself to analyze culture war topics in a fair, rational way, but chose to highlight almost exclusively the flaws with the social justice left, with little due given when it has potentially valid ptsShow this thread2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

It's fair to find serious fault with his blind spots here, but I think there is a significant distance between not talking about race and actively advancing biological racial differences to explain social differences, or actively minimizing social drivers.

Agreed, there is a massive difference between SSC and Murray. I am concerned about an SSC -> Murray -> NRx pipeline and I am frustrated by how easy it would be for SSC to curtail this. Just say you think Murray's views are offensive instead of burying it in a thought experiment!

Lol Scott has had years to just say "Charles Murray is a racist so fuck him" in so many words if that's what he really thinks and yet MYSTERIOUSLY, SOMEHOW, he JUST WON'T SAY IT Gosh why could that possibly be His fans rack their big brains for a logical explanation

The valley always had these awkward men that convince themselves that their rationalism allows a clearer view of the world. They end up libertarians and fascist friendly. There’s no reason to use e.g. NRx instead of fascist except the books they read.
