John Nash always maintained he was only antisemitic when he was psychotic, and it all went away when he got proper treatment
Just like he was also apparently only gay when he was off his meds

Officially choosing to believe that I avoided this in terms of paranoid schizophrenia failure modes by not having to Bring The Jews Into It due to being the Jews myself already tbh

I thought he was just (“just”) bipolar? Same genetic marker so there’s probably some extent to which the distinction’s meaningfully fake I guess but I’m less than qualified to know things about how

In all honesty, I'm not actually sure just which psychotic disorder(s) Fischer actually had

Fischer resisted diagnosis and treatment his entire life so we'll never get any kind of definitive answer on that

As far as his antisemitism goes, Garry Kasparov wrote a biography of him speculating that (as with John Nash) the antisemitism was linked to anticommunism, as it so frequently is, especially in the Cold War

Fischer in particular, during his reign as World Champion, saw himself as this kind of lone rebel surrounded by a huge team of "Soviet Jewish" players coordinating with each other to take him down and destroy him

The toxic circumstance of legitimately being famous and legitimately being targeted by a lot of people while also having suffered paranoid symptoms since childhood

That was an actual exchange he had in life, one of his friends was a psychologist who urged him to get help because "you sound paranoid" and he was like "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you" Which is, you know, strictly speaking true

But yeah his mom found a dude who was both a ranked chess master and a psychiatrist to play with him when he was 13 and try to talk to him at the same time Said he couldn't give a formal diagnosis but the boy seemed "paranoid but not psychotic"

(Bipolar but not schizophrenic, I guess we'd say today) It didn't go very far because the boy only agreed to the meetings for the chess and was very resistant to opening up Once Fischer was an adult he cut off contact with his mom for her attempts to push him into treatment

not so much "bipolar" as the sort of problems that "schizotypal personality disorder" is meant to describe which to modern eyes isn't describing a "developmental" personality disorder so much as "mild" paranoid schizophrenia (or maybe sometimes an ASD plus OCD symptoms)
