My compassion for conspiracy theorists dried up once I realized this. I had been thinking of them as hapless people swept up into absurd beliefs through bad epistemology. But the prejudice came first, and it's always motivated reasoning from there.

(Bipolar but not schizophrenic, I guess we'd say today) It didn't go very far because the boy only agreed to the meetings for the chess and was very resistant to opening up Once Fischer was an adult he cut off contact with his mom for her attempts to push him into treatment
