I've always thought it was really darkly funny how in the real Maria's journal she writes about how she obviously knew the Mother Superior was trying to foist her off on the Captain because she really, really didn't want her joining the convent permanently And she did resent ithttps://twitter.com/CAwkward/status/1360819595297386496 …

Maria was dead set on becoming a nun because she had a tough time dealing with adult life on her own and wanted an institution to act in this parental role of giving her guidance, purpose and structure And the Mother Superior was like "Oh hell no I didn't sign up for that"

I suspect it was also a money thing - supporting a nun costs money, whereas “giving” her to a local widower saves her upkeep and might also get you a donation.

Well sure but the Mother Superior wasn't against initiates taking vows in general, I don't think She was a hardass about the convent's high standards but she also obviously thought Maria in particular would've made a substandard nun

On the other hand openly firing one of your initiates who's really eager and gung-ho and all that is bad vibes, harmful for morale You gotta find a way to kind of ease her out if you can (Everyone involved thought the nanny assignment thing was incredibly transparent)

"Hey look you wanted to be a nun because you can't take care of yourself This Captain guy can't take care of himself either, ever since he left the military And he has a bunch of kids who can't take care of themselves Why not, you know, give it a shot"
