I've heard a lot of people saying they worry the TLOU show will just be Breaking Bad in that it's about a toxic dude who becomes a murderer over selfish decisions, but I do think Joel is fundamentally different from Walter White in the sense of what he wants

W.W. *wants* everyone to believe he's fighting for his family, and everything he does is for them, but he actually rejects the best option for them, which is the equivalent of Joel having the chance to stay with Ellie in Jackson, which he wanted to do but Ellie refused

Basically Walter White's desire for his family to be happy really is an excuse, whereas Joel's comparable desire is *selfish* but also genuine

Yeah the big emotional scene is Joel trying to "get rid of" Ellie because he thinks she'd be better off with Tommy and Ellie refusing This is the exact opposite of Walter's creepy possessive dynamic with his family and anyone he thinks "belongs" to him
