It's weird and hard to explain to Gen Z kids who weren't there how bizarrely intense Whedon fandom was in its heyday and how ridiculous the amount of power he had in certain social circles was Whedon fans used to humblebrag about how cultlike they werehttps://twitter.com/sesmith/status/1360333426243424256 …

"What other TV writer has a whole academic journal dedicated to his work?" etc (Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies, which was still going as of 2020 - https://www.whedonstudies.tv/slayage-the-journal-of-whedon-studies.html …)

TVTropes started as specifically a Buffy fansite in 2004, before becoming a general Whedon fansite, then a genre TV fansite, then TV in general, then all media in general But the Whedon fandom in-group jargon is still all over the place there - terms like "Big Bad" etc

TV Tropes started when the asshole who set it up spent well over a year LARPing a sock puppet called Gus on http://Buffistas.org , scraping our community for content & ideas, then staged his own faux death, to the acute distress of members of the tight-knit community. FUCK him.

Idk I didn't even start reading TVTropes until like 2013, which I gather is shortly before he sold the whole thing?

The original "TVTropes guy" sold the website to a couple of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs in 2014, who held a Kickstarter to give the site a "total makeover" - that's pretty much the beginning of "modern TVTropes"

Was that around the time they had that Advertising Panic, and quickly removed any page that talked about any work even pornography-adjacent? 'cause that would explain a lot to me in retrospect.

The Google Adpocalypse happened a few years before and I think motivated his desire to wash his hands of the site
