Okay so first off all, "elegance" and "simplicity" being a good thing and "arbitrary" rules being a bad thing is really a personal aesthetic preference, nothing more But chess is EXTREMELY arbitrary and not at all elegant Go fans talk shit about chess for this constantlyhttps://twitter.com/safeforspamnow/status/1360094897630543872 …

Fischer was vocal about finding this extremely boring and constricting and invented Random Chess to force players to have to adapt to an unpredictable situation from the very first move, instead of waiting for the "midgame" for combinatorial math to overcome collective wisdom
-
This is why Fischer also said he always preferred to play Black over White, because having to respond to someone else's first move was marginally more intellectually stimulating than making that first choice

Huh, not to different from competitive RTS's in that sense. Probably explains why I'm not terribly good at them either. I've never been willing to put the time into memorizing and perfecting the early game, even though that will get you like 90% of the way.

Every game with predetermined starting conditions is going to end up like this if you have serious tournament play for real stakes (in MtG terms, playing for real money forces everyone to become Spike)

Also I've seen "serious" players lose their shit when someone starts doing something random. Like how dare you do something that isn't from one of the bajillion standard openings or defenses? I mean, I've seen a guy yell "you're not playing right" for someone getting creative.

To be fair I've also seen this happening with poker, which also has a bunch of stuff you're "supposed" to do and stuff you're not. In this case, someone going off was directed at me (my hole cards were a 3 6 offsuit, and I won against dudes pocket pair of Jacks).
