The lesson of LBJ's legacy is that sometimes you want politicians do don't have very strong principles and just give in to pressure, as long as you make sure you're doing the pressuringhttps://twitter.com/ianbobmorris/status/1360112200388472832 …

@arthur_affect based on the stuff biden supported in the past i am pleasantly surprised at how good he has been now, i like it when politicians know which way the wind is blowing and adapt

LBJ’s career is just fundamentally baffling. Save for about a 30 month stretch, and even then including parts of that period, he spent his entire political career being a near Andrew Jackson level piece of shit.

He's one of those historical figures where you actually can imagine that on one specific night he was visited by three spirits

I gave a somewhat similar regaling of LBJ's record to my eldest and then ended it with "... and he's responsible for signing one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in the history of the country" and I gotpic.twitter.com/ZNW7o9KsOz

Like Ashoka or the slave-ship captain who wrote “Amazing Grace.” Can you honestly imagine anything worse than being one of the captors aboard a slaver? Your quarters separated by bare boards. Weakened foreign moans waking you in the night. I swear I’d a jumped overboard.

Robert Caro posits (convincingly) that he always held antiracist, progressive views, but was just a master at holding his cards to his chest and waiting till he had to power to implement them. Plus, he viewed it as his destiny to be president.
