I wonder if part of the reason Hollywood seems to constantly be this dysfunctional abusive environment is that with the studio system gone, hierarchy is blurred and directors don't really think of themselves as the actors' boss.

But the studio system didn’t keep a lid on abuse—it kept a lid on bad PR (for the studio). They didn’t care that Rock Hudson was gay—they cared that if it got out it might impact their bottom line.
