Yeah so I don't think being an "ironic asshole" as your shtick among your trusted friends is necessarily a bad thing But it's something to be cautious with in any professional environment, and is frequently used as a way to intentionally blur the line with actual abusehttps://twitter.com/MKPinDC/status/1359910275185582080 …

Somewhere there’s a clip of Tudyk explaining how Whedon communicated on the Firefly set, using a lot of sarcasm, “look, fool, would you like to take that again without being terrible and ruining it for everybody”. So I bet there’s plenty he saw but interprets generously https://twitter.com/michelledean/status/1359905683022389248 …

When you're someone's actual boss and you have the power to fire them from their job and end their career you really can't indulge in the bants as one does among one's peers

This is the price you pay for being the boss, that's just how it works It's the same as why you can't flirt with people or hit on them or date them with wild abandon as you could if you only knew them socially

I wonder if part of the reason Hollywood seems to constantly be this dysfunctional abusive environment is that with the studio system gone, hierarchy is blurred and directors don't really think of themselves as the actors' boss.

Absolutely right. I can be very sarcastic/snarky at work because I'm not supervising anybody (and I immediately back off if I get vibes that my coworker doesn't understand what I'm doing). Our boss can't do that because she holds power over us.

Every time someone on my team talks to me about becoming a people leader, the first question I ask them is "are you prepared for the reality that you'd no longer be just one of the gang? Do you know what that means?" Being the boss changes the dynamic, it's inescapable.

That's one of the main concerns of HR management principles, right? Does one party hold power over the other. I just said HR management principles. Arf.

i like the concept of "discourse power" specifically, the power to settle the interpretation of speech acts like, "is this a joke or is this serious" where power means, you get to choose at any moment whether it's a joke or you're dead serious

witness for instance trump's incitement of sedition, which since the attack has failed republicans are trying to claim was a joke, but had it succeeded they would have noted that it was of course serious all along
