It was so obvious It was both bad storytelling and, as they say, a bad look Like a lot of fans inclined to take his side couldn't deny he was acting badly here because he made it impossible to ignorehttps://twitter.com/Shaker_aphra/status/1359600954514038785 …

(Which is a whole trope that WandaVision alluded to)

A good example is The Office. Angela Kinsey was pregnant for almost a whole season early (S3 I think?) but I honestly couldn’t tell just by watching the show.

Good writers can work with it. Usually by writing around it. Easy. Done.

Not to mention the historical example of Lucy & Desi incorporating real life pregnancy into the show... Back when you couldn't even say the word pregnant.
-
Well sure but the whole issue in this case is that his initial plans for the story didn't involve the character getting pregnant and when he "integrated" it into the show it got really ugly

Serialized storytelling also HAS to account for the possibility of something happening with the actors. Sometimes plan need to change!

The show is about magic and demons. He could have written the pregnancy into the show in sooooo many ways that weren't totally offensive and weird.

If I ever wrote a sitcom I'd want to do a background joke at some point where we start shooting one of the (cis) male actors like he was pregnant for a few episodes without calling attention to it, just to see who catches on.

When they do write the pregnancy in though there's a chance the actress has a miscarriage like Kirstie Alley on Cheers and Katey Segal on Married with Children. So now you have an actress dealing with this painful loss and the pregnancy has to be written away.

Keep in mind Buffy was ending and Firefly was getting cancelled at the same time so I have to assume the thought process was also this story will get people watching to see how this all turns out so they went for the crazy soap opera option. It's the most serialized season.

Realizing now how Little House on the Prairie ran for a decade due to Michael Landon coming up with the most sensational, melodramatic episode plots that Laura Wilder never would have imagined.
