What Millennials envy is affordable commodities and the ability to sit down, or come and go as one pleases The idea of having one of these Gen-X yuppie jobs where you sit in a cubicle all day still kind of makes me want to slowly decapitate myself with a power sander

Yeah, and like, here's the thing: millennials envy *fictional 90s jobs*, because, and this is important EVERY SINGLE FICTIONAL CHARACTER IS PRIVILEGED holding down a real job gets in the way of standard hijinks, which is why The Office's...Office is more like a friend group

it's why all these workplace comedies end up with not "just" office romances and other relationships that actual real world workplaces - where we spend a sizable chunk of our lives - actively prohibit, but all sorts of BEHAVIORS which are deeply unprofessional.

Yeah, and I mean - that's just life to a certain degree, isn't it? Even if I never had to go to work, I don't make that many clever quips in an hour to be watchable.

Oh sure absolutely, it's just that this feels like it's worth emphasizing we have yet to discover The Good Life our media promises us, because our media almost never corresponds overmuch with the dynamics of our actual lives, even non-genre media.

Ok but like Objectively, if you aren't extraordinarily lucky, you are less likely today to have various markers that correlate strongly with objective health markers like lifespan, than in 1999.

I'm in fact breaking my own freaking rule in this argument by setting aside the various civil rights gains made since then, but that's because in this fictional context we have no reason to think the Machines didn't bake social liberalism into their simulated idealized capitalism

And I'm sorry, Neo's job seems perfectly fine. He gets chastised for being late repeatedly. Which sucks if he's going through mental health stuff, but we know in story it's because he's doing crime all night.I would absolutely love to have a job just programming some random thing

What I think is pretty rare is for people to have work that's actually the best part of their lives, or what drives them. Typically, it's a means to an end; you do it for the money. Neo also has this late night social life which, notably, ALSO doesn't make him happy.

That's the whole reason for the secret underground hacking career Like, that doesn't actually make him happy either, but it's part of his search

Yeah - but I think it matters here that the hacking career *itself* is also useless, another distraction where he's bored and lonely. His deep feeling is that there's something he's missing, but that means that sex or music or partying or friendship is equally pointless.

I mean bluntly, as somebody who lives in the Bay Area? fuck if I'd ever have the time and energy to go clubbing and have an underground hacking career after my work at the office, I basically drove home for an hour and just thudded at home. And I *did not have a hard schedule*

I drove to work, I did my job, I came home, I sat in my room. Because not only was it expensive to own a place that didn't require a long commute, but I just lacked the emotional energy to Live It Up the way our media proclaims is normal. *Most people don't do that*.
